National Tour Update
After a rewarding stop in Victoria over the weekend in Strath Creek, our team is taking a well earned break this week before continuing the Wildlife Recovery Australia National Tour, where we connect with wildlife carers and deliver critical veterinary support where it is needed most.
Strath Creek, VIC
On the weekend, Wildlife Recovery Australia Hospital, Matilda, Australia’s first and only fully equipped mobile wildlife hospital, and our veterinary team spent the day in the central Victorian township of Strath Creek, visiting new friends in wildlife care at LnLz Wildlife Care & Rescue and Euroa Pouch Babies.
It was a valuable opportunity to demonstrate how sick, injured and orphaned native animals benefit from expert veterinary treatment working hand in hand with dedicated wildlife carers and rescuers on the front line.
Among the patients seen was an adorable young bare-nosed wombat admitted with a respiratory issue. We also assessed several swamp wallabies, including one found in fire-affected grounds with minor burns. Our team was able to provide guidance to support its recovery, recognising the complexity and challenges carers face when treating fire-affected wildlife.
Dr Maddie Lloyd also performed surgery on a sulphur-crested cockatoo to remove what appeared to be a shotgun pellet. The procedure was successful, giving this beautiful bird a much stronger chance of full recovery.
A young sugar glider received a general health check, and the good news is it is doing very well. With excellent care already provided, it is well on track for release back into the wild.
As the National Tour has a pause, we’re reflecting on our journey and how it continues to highlight the critical need for government support, dedicated resources and ongoing training for wildlife veterinary and rehabilitation services.
